July 2018: Juluwarlu Men’s Shed
When Artist-Mentors, Eveline Kotai and Giles Hohnen returned for two weeks in June-July, Giles and Juluwarlu’s Lauchie Gillett hatched a plan with Yindjibarndi men to turn our front shed veranda into a Men’s Shed. In no time at all, with a lot of serious action, work benches, seating, and basic tools were in place, and artefacts, Marrga sculptures, and art framing were underway.
July 2018: Artists exhibit at Cossack Art Awards
In early July, 9 artists from the Juluwarlu Artists’ Centre exhibited artworks at the prestigious Cossack Art Awards. We were delighted when Eveline Kotai won the major 2018 Cossack Award for the Best Painting Exhibited. Eveline and her husband, Giles Hohnen, who were our guest Artist-Mentors for third of our Nyinyart Yinda Artists Residencies in 2017. They have become much loved friends of our artists, continuing their creative support for us by providing a free day-long workshop at their Fremantle studios, and returning free-of-charge for a further Residency in June-July. Eveline and Giles will be returning again in October. After her Cossack Award win, Eveline has devoted part of her Cossack prize money to founding a small collection of our artists’ work for a Juluwarlu Collection which will be shown at the Yindjibarndi Museum and Cultural Gallery that will open in 2019 in the old Victoria Hotel that is currently being re-furbished by the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation.
