The first recordings in our Archive were created in 1998 when Juluwarlu founders Lorraine Coppin and Michael Woodley purchased an analogue cassette tape recorder to preserve the stories of Michael’s grandfather, the late Yindjibarndi Elder Nhugi (Woodley King). Since Juluwarlu was incorporated in 2000, those initial sound recordings have grown to hundreds of hours of audio and video recordings and many thousands of photographs created not just in-house by the Juluwarlu team and associated media units, but donations of archive recordings dating back to the middle of the twentieth century and photographs from even earlier.

One of the most significant collections consists of material produced for the documentary film Exile and the Kingdom between 1980-1990. This award-winning film is itself available for sale on DVD from the Juluwarlu shop.
